Hp-law is attested in Egyptian sources from Early Middle Kingdom onwards. In literary textsthe term is mentioned in association with the concept of Maat, and refers to the maintenanceof the equilibrium of society. In funerary contexts law is subjected to the concept of Maat andassociated with the survival of the deceased in the afterlife. However, the term hp is most oftenfound in administrative contexts, to which it provides a legal framework. Some officials are incharge of it as well. Within epithets the mention of hp emphasizes proximity to the royal personas well as the possession of all moral virtues necessary to a man of quality. The hp-law standsfor a moral reference necessary to ensure the proper functioning of pharaonic society.
