The three ages of Algerian emigration was first published in 1977 in the Actes de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales (Sayad 1977). Abdelmalek Sayad started his career as a research assistant for Pierre Bourdieu with whom he co-published Le déracinement: la crise de l’agriculture traditionnelle en Algérie (Bourdieu and Sayad 1964), an ethnography of the transformations of Algerian Berber culture at the end of the decolonisation war.
