Dans cet article, nous nous interrogeons sur les raisons de l’interdiction ou de la stricte réglementation du prêt à intérêt dans l’histoire européenne, aussi bien par les trois monothéismes que par la tradition aristotélicienne, les droits romain, canonique et civil médiéval. L’hypothèse qui gouverne notre argumentation est que toute économie de marché quelque peu développée fait nécessairement intervenir des opérations de prêt et donc un prix pour la monnaie ; une telle évidence ne pouvait être ignorée par l’esprit qui tente de l’interdire. Par conséquent, l’interdiction vise, au-delà du simple phénomène d’intérêt, un phénomène bien plus complexe dont l’intelligence exige, à notre sens, une analyse institutionnelle.

The question of the prohibition of interest loan in european historyThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons why interest loan was prohibited or strictly regulated in European History, by all three monotheisms as well as by the Aristotelian tradition, and the Roman, Canonical and Civil medieval laws. The hypothesis, which is the basis of this argument, is that any market economy developed to a certain degree necessarily involves money lending and therefore a price for money. Those who attempted to prohibit it could not have ignored such an obvious fact. Consequently it is believed that prohibiting interest loan is an issue, which goes well beyond the concern with interest itself. And we assume that the understanding of such a phenomenon requires some institutional analysis.Classification JEL : B11, B15, K12, Z12
