Résumé En

Late Latin texts, however chaotic or artificial they may seem, furnish precious information about the evolutionary tendencies of the language as well as about their authors’ and scribes’ linguistic competence. The present study aims at evaluating the importance of each of the factors that determine the linguistic quality of these texts, such as the conscious or spontaneous imitation of classical models, the influence of the rapidly changing spoken language, and special devices serving written communication during the period of Late Latin “diglossia”. Grammatical, lexical, and rhetorical data obtained from the works of Gregorius, Hydatius, Iordanes, Pseudo-Fredegarius, and the complex relationships between source texts and their reformulations, characterize Late Latin chronicle as a genre where the force of tradition coexists with a slow renewal due to external constraints.
