Nostalgia and Re-Imagining of the Orient in Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Between the Woods and the Water and The Broken Road

This essay aims to examine the re-imagining of the Orient in Patrick Leigh Fermor’s works: Between the Woods and the Water and The Broken Road, arguing and commenting on the definition of the Orient between the interwar period of Europe. Moreover, the idea of orientalism is to be discussed and handled in light of the concept of frontier orientalism, especially concerning Leigh Fermor’s remarks on Central and Eastern European countries. Additionally, I will examine the concept of nostalgia in Leigh Fermor’s work in an inquisitive manner, commenting on Leigh Fermor’s nostalgia as well as its features. Nostalgia in the said works is to be discussed as a concept reflecting the romantic past while creating a stepping-stone for those regions.

Cet article se donne pour but d’examiner la façon dont Patrick Leigh Fermor réimagine l’Orient dans Entre fleuve et forêt et La route interrompue en proposant un commentaire de la définition de l’Orient pendant l’entre-deux-guerres en Europe. La notion d’« orientalisme » sera par ailleurs discutée à la lumière du concept d’orientalisme de la frontière, notamment en ce qui concerne les remarques de Leigh Fermor sur les pays d’Europe centrale et orientale. J’interrogerai ensuite la notion de nostalgie dans l’œuvre de Leigh Fermor, en commentant l’usage qu’il en fait et les caractéristiques qu’elle prend dans son œuvre. Je proposerai de voir dans la nostalgie un concept qui ramène l’auteur à un passé romantique, tout en lui fournissant un mode d’accès possible à ces régions.
