Dès sa découverte, en 1506, le Laocoon attire l’attention des artistes. Marco Dente exécute une gravure du célèbre groupe, mais représente dans une deuxième gravure un autre Laocoon au type différent qui a donné lieu à une importante descendance iconographique. L’A. recherche ici les raisons du choix de l’artiste. Le modèle de cette deuxième gravure incorpore plusieurs traits de la miniature du Vergilius Vaticanus, bien connu alors, mais Dente ajoute et fond d’autres éléments tirés d’une tradition iconographique qui remonte jusqu’à l’art grec du Ve siècle av. J.-C. C’est cette tradition figurée du Laocoon agenouillé que retrace cette étude qui reprend, en contrepoint, le dossier bibliographique et les diverses interprétations des historiens d’art. À travers les siècles, depuis Polygnote jusqu’à la Renaissance, en passant par les peintures pompéiennes, la force de la tradition figurée préserve certains motifs “ obligés ” qui subissent adaptations, recréations et fusions.

The Kneeling Laocoon : Genealogy of an Iconographical Type.The Laocoon, as soon as it was discovered in 1506, drew the attention of artists. Marco Dente made an engraving representing the famous group, and in another engraving, he chose a different type which generated a rich iconographical lineage. In this article, the A. tries to find why the artist chose this type. The model obviously borrows some features from the Vergilius Vaticanus miniature, well known to his contemporaries, but Dente adds and includes other elements found in the older iconographical tradition, as far back as Greek art of the 5th century BC. The present study re-examines this figurative tradition of the kneeling Laocoon and reviews both the bibliography and interpretations of art historians. Over centuries, from Polygnotus to the Renaissance, via Pompeian painting, the strength of the figurative tradition preserved some compelling motifs which undergo adaptation, re-creation and fusion.
