À l’automne 1944, plus de quinze mille tirailleurs sénégalais sont progressivement et parfois chaotiquement retirés du front de la Première Armée française dans la région de Belfort, puis transférés dans le Sud de la France. Ni véritable relève, ni tout à fait hivernage, cette opération de « blanchiment », ou « blanchissement » pour reprendre les termes connotés de l’époque, soulève de nombreuses interrogations. Elle apparaît comme le résultat d’un processus de décision complexe qui articule considérations militaires influencées par la « théorie des races martiales », nécessité politique de l’intégration des combattants venus de la Résistance intérieure à l’armée régulière.
