Zofia Romanowicz adopted the concept of time as a fourth dimension that allowed her to paint next to each other events belonging to different time periods. By freely manipulating chronology while maintaining narrative suspense, she mastered the techniques practiced by the nouveau roman, which she used as a method to relate the unspeakable experiences of camp life and the attempts to live after the camp. Next to narrative time and to camp survivors’ time, the article examines human time, asserting that it allows us to live again and that everyone must build it for oneself as one would build a house.

La romancière avait fait sienne la conception du temps comme quatrième dimension lui permettant de juxtaposer à son gré comme sur un tableau des événements d’époques différentes. Manipulant librement la chronologie tout en sachant maintenir une tension narrative, elle maîtrisait les moyens mis en exergue par le Nouveau Roman. L’article examine successivement le temps narratif, le temps de ceux qui ont survécu à l’enfer concentrationnaire et le temps humain, celui qui doit permettre de re-vivre, que chacun doit construire pour soi-même comme sa maison.
