Il se pourrait que l’analyse soit le troisième métier impossible, avec éduquer et gouverner, lançait Freud dans sa préface au livre d’Aichhorn sur adolescence et délinquance, publié dans l’après-Première Guerre mondiale. Toutefois, à la façon dont il énonce ce dicton, Freud laisse à penser qu’il craignait surtout que la psychanalyse ne soit par trop facile et serve d’adjuvant thérapeutique. Nous proposons d’explorer les différentes manifestations de l’impossible rencontrées par Freud lors du défrichement de cette pratique. Puis, dans un second temps, de considérer la fonction déterminante que lui conférera Lacan. En effet, dans un renversement fulgurant, Lacan va faire de cette succession d’impossibles pour la psychanalyse la condition même de son exercice. Désormais, la psychanalyse est un métier impossible, encore dépend-il des psychanalystes qu’elle le reste. Pour ce faire, il importe qu’ils n’errent pas dans le réel, en le confondant par exemple avec le réel tel que Michel Foucault le définit et qui n’est autre que la réalité. Pour le psychanalyste, il n’est qu’un seul réel, dit Lacan, le réel mathématique. C’est de ce réel que nous nous proposons de suivre la piste.
