Un nouveau programme de fouille, engagé sur le site de Ribemont-sur-Ancre depuis 1990, a permis l'étude de la plus grande partie du gisement laténien et le réexamen de l'installation cultuelle gallo-romaine. Les restes de plusieurs centaines d'individus et les milliers d'armes découverts sur les sols de La Tène moyenne sont maintenant interprétés comme les vestiges d'un trophée monumental qui aurait été constitué à la fin du IIIe s. avant J.-C. Celui-ci, par la suite, n'a pas connu d'activité cultuelle notable ; ses ruines, encore en élévation partielle, ne furent nettoyées que dans les années 30 avant J.-C. quand une population militaire construisit sur le lieu même un temple, au milieu d'un sanctuaire organisé, orné d'emblée d'une décoration peu commune pour un monument édifié en pleine campagne. Dès le début du Ier s., il fut équipé d'une colonnade en pierre et, à la fin du même siècle, d'un double quadriportique. Dans la seconde moitié du IIe s., on reconstruisit le temple sous une forme monumentale, d'allure classique, doté d'un nouveau portique. Ces constructions imposantes s'accompagnent d'une nouvelle conception architecturale du site qui s'étend alors sur plus de 50 ha, en une succession de cours étagées en terrasses, dominées par le temple et où trouvent place également un théâtre et deux ensembles thermaux. La nouvelle étude de l'architecture du sanctuaire et des vestiges matériels permet de reconsidérer la nature du culte : il faut y voir un culte public dépendant directement du chef lieu de cité, Samarobriva.
