Using the concept of “artialization” coined by Alain Roger, I examine the complementary dynamics of voice and landscape in a few novels by Willa Cather. I first investigate how landscape and singing complement each other in The Song of the Lark, before moving on to stories in which imaginary landscapes conjured up by singing seem to take over reality, resulting in epistemic uncertainty. Finally, I look into the case of Sapphira and the Slave Girl, where landscapes and voices seem to be working together to cover the scandal of slavery. This exploration leads me to emphasize the disruptive power of voice and landscape which, in their inherent ambivalence, enable fiction to simultaneously express contradictory notions.

À l’aide du concept d’ « artialisation » forgé par Alain Roger, nous examinons les dynamiques complémentaires de la voix et du paysage dans quelques romans de Willa Cather. Nous étudions d’abord comment le paysage et le chant se nourrissent mutuellement dans The Song of the Lark, avant de nous tourner vers des œuvres où les paysages imaginaires suscités par le chant semblent prendre le pas sur la réalité, entraînant un trouble épistémologique. Enfin, nous nous penchons sur le cas de Sapphira and the Slave Girl, où paysages et voix semblent chercher à masquer le scandale de l’institution esclavagiste. Ce parcours nous conduit à mettre l’accent sur le pouvoir de brouillage de la voix et du paysage qui, par leur ambivalence principielle, permettent de faire cohabiter les contraires au sein de la fiction.
