The Making-over of the Rwandan cultural space by the Church and the ColonizationThis article, dealing with the period from 1900 to the independence of Rwanda, shows how Belgian colonization made radical changes in Rwandan society and culture, including the process of evangelization carried out by the Pères Blancs.Pre-colonial Rwanda was a cultural entity unto itself. By settling and evangelizing the population of the Bahutu and the Batutsi, European missionaries imposed their racial prejudices on blacks. They introduced new means of communication, and replaced traditional cultural-social models with an administrative and religious system which was resisted to some extent. These are the fundamental changes in Rwandan society that created the background for the 1994 genocide.
