Building on a conceptualization of the reading copy, this thesis intends to develop a material theory of reading. Taken as a singular object of reception, the copy is conceptualized and separated from the notion of literary work, upon which it traditionally depends according to aesthetic philosophy. Its materiality is apprehended, through a comparative lens, by considering the various media and modes of inscription (manuscript, print, digital) which produce reading objects. I propose new theoretical tools to seize the diversity and the variability of the reading copies as well as those of the individual bodies that read them. I will also analyze the way in which we invent bodies through the act of reading, as well as the different aspects of the reading action, viewed as material performance. This perspective departs from a purely linguistic apprehension of reading that has dominated literary theory since the 1960s. By considering not only the abstract act of reading a text, but the reading of a particular copy where language and matter are intertwined in a non-dualistic way, I will try to shift the theoretical attention towards material and individual phenomena that were previously unnoticed.

Cette thèse a pour objectif de proposer, à partir de la notion d’exemplaire, une théorie matérielle de la lecture. Compris comme objet individuel de la réception, l’exemplaire y est conceptualisé et détaché de la notion d’œuvre, dont la philosophie esthétique le fait traditionnellement dépendre. Sa matérialité est appréhendée, dans une perspective comparatiste, en considérant les différents supports et modes d’inscription (manuscrit, imprimé, numérique) qui produisent des objets de lecture. On propose des outils théoriques qui permettent de penser la diversité et les variations des exemplaires aussi bien que de celles des corps particuliers qui les lisent. La manière dont nous nous inventons des corps dans la lecture, ainsi que les différentes modalités de l’action lectorale envisagée comme performance matérielle seront également analysées. La perspective adoptée s’écarte d’une appréhension purement linguistique de la lecture qui a dominé la théorie littéraire depuis les années 1960. En considérant non plus la lecture d’un texte se tenant seulement « dans la langue », mais la lecture d’un exemplaire où s’entremêlent langue et matière de façon non-dualiste, on tentera de déplacer l’attention théorique vers des phénomènes matériels et individuels jusqu’ici inaperçus.
