Gabi Dolff-Bonekämper, « Valeurs de contemporanéité : Pour une rénovation de la théorie des monuments d’Aloïs Riegl », Revue de l'art, ID : 10670/1.uhx7sg
In his article, « Der moderne Denkmalkultus. Sein Wesen und seine Entstehung. » (The Modern Cult of Monuments, its Nature and its Origins) published in 1903, Alois Riegl developed his finely dialectic concept of the values that can be attributed to a monument, erected as such or having become such over time. In this article, accent is given to the continuous presentification of values in all judgment, tied to a constantly advancing present. Any present, marked by its own antagonisms, will see disagreements around the possible values attributable to a monument. Thus is introduced here the notion of an adversarial value or of a confrontation: the disagreement over the monument articulates a contemporary disagreement that becomes negotiable in the context of a heritage debate.
