An der Bretagne tief hängend, wo seine Familie seit fünfzehn Jahrhunderten fest verwurzelt ist, hat der Professor André Guilcher sein ganzes Leben der Geographie der Küsten und der Meere gewidmet. Nach einer Habilitationsschrift über das Relief der Südbretagne, die under der Fuhrung von Emmanuel de Martonne vorbereitet wurde, wurde er Professor an der Universität von Nancy, dann Paris und Brest. Unter einem sehr fruchtbaren Werk, das fast 650 Titel enthàlt und 10000 Seiten nähert, wird die Nachwelt sich originale Bücher und bedeutende Synthesen merken, zum Beispiel Morphologie littorale et sous-marine (1954), Précis d'hydrologie marine et continentale (1965 und 1979), Coral Reef Geomorphology (1988). Vierzig Jahre lang, von 1954 bis zu seinem Tod, hat er allein den ozeanographischen Bericht in der Zeitschrift Norois geführt. André Guilcher war ein berufserfahrener Geograph der die ganze Welt bereist hatte und direkte Kenntnisse von fast alien Küsten erwerbt hatte. Er wa einer der besten Spezialisten von der Morphologie der Korallenriffe geworden. Da er 24 Habilitationschrifte und noch viele andere Doktorarbeiten geführt hatte, die sich fur einen guten Teil auf die See bezogen, war er der unbestrittene Meister der Meeresgeographie in Frankreich geworden. Dieser hôfliche und feinsinnige Wissenschaftler vom internationalen Ruf, der eine grosse historische und geographische Kultur hatte, war auch ein wohlwollender und auf die anderen bedachter Mann.

Strongly bound to Brittany where his family was established for fifteen centuries, Professor André Guilcher dedicated his life to the geography of coasts and seas. After he submitted his thesis on the geomorphology of Southern Brittany, prepared under the guidance of Emmanuel de Martonne, he was successively professor at the universities of Nancy, Paris and Brest. Among many publications, — about 650 titles and almost 10000 pages — , the posterity will retain several innovating books and noteworthy syntheses, such as Morphologie littorale et sous-marine (1954), Précis d'hydrologie marine et continentale (1965 and 1979), Coral Reef Geomorphology (1988). During forty years, from 1954 to his death, he was in charge, alone, of the océanographie review in the journal Norois. A. Guilcher was a field geographer who extensively travelled around the world, so acquiring a direct knowledge of nearly all the shores. He became one of the best specialists of coral reef morphology. As he supervised 24 state doctorates and many other theses, most of them related to the sea, he was the leader of the marine geography in France. This urban and subtle scholar, well-known in the world, this highly cultured man in history and geography was also kind and full of attention for others.

Après un doctorat d'Etat sur le relief de la Bretagne méridionale (1948), préparé sous la direction d'Emmanuel de Martonne, il fut successivement professeur aux universités de Nancy, Paris et Brest. D'une œuvre très abondante qui compte presque 650 titres et approche les 10000 pages, la postérité retiendra des ouvrages novateurs et de remarquables synthèses, par exemple Morphologie littorale et sous-marine (1954), Précis d'hydrologie marine et continentale (1965 et 1979), Coral Reef Geomorphology (1988). Pendant quarante ans, de 1954 à sa mort, il a tenu, seul, la chronique océanographique de la revue Norois. André Guilcher était un géographe de terrain qui avait parcouru le monde entier et acquis une connaissance directe de la quasi-totalité des littoraux. Il était devenu l'un des meilleurs spécialistes de la morphologie des récifs coralliens. Ayant dirigé 24 thèses de doctorat d'Etat et de nombreuses autres thèses qui, pour la plupart, touchaient au domaine marin, il était devenu le maître incontesté de la géographie de la mer en France. Ce savant de réputation internationale, courtois et fin, d'une grande culture historique et géographique, était aussi un homme bienveillant et attentif aux autres.
