Au mitan des années 1970, Pascal Ory, dans un article dévolu à La Marseillaise de Jean Renoir et publié dans Le Mouvement social, démontre que l’étude d’un film historique ne saurait se limiter à l’observation des images et des sons qui le composent mais nécessite d’en comprendre les conditions de production, de diffusion et de réception Dans le champ du cinéma, cette approche culturaliste, exigeante mais indispensable pour éviter les mésinterprétations, finira par s’imposer, mais seulement vingt ans plus tard, quand la réforme du dépôt légal des œuvres audiovisuelles (1992) obligera les producteurs à confier à des centres dédiés l’ensemble de la documentation écrite afférente à leurs créations. Cette plus grande accessibilité aux archives, de plus en plus massivement numérisées, facilite grandement le travail de l’historien.

In a 1975 article devoted to Jean Renoir's La Marseillaise and published in Le Mouvement social, Pascal Ory argued that the historical analysis of a film, should not be limited to the study of the images and sounds it was made up of, but that it required an understanding of the conditions of its production, distribution and reception. In the field of cinema studies, this culturalist approach, which is demanding but essential to avoid any misinterpretation, would eventually be fully recognized (twenty years later, after a reform of the legal deposit of audiovisual works (1992) had required producers to entrust to dedicated archive centers all the written documentation related to their works. This greater access to archival material, more and more often digitized, has greatly facilitated the work of the historian.
