Si le statut de l’artiste a été historiquement pensé au masculin puis revu par un intérêt pour des artistes femmes, cette thèse examine la construction artistique d’une non-binarité de genre. Est postulé ici que les pratiques corporelles non binaires issues du champ social sont observables dans l’art à travers le travail de transformation de soi : notre hypothèse suppose que la subversion des genres réside au cœur de la création, se recoupant avec le bouleversement des pratiques artistiques dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, comme le renouvellement des médiums traditionnels par le corps et les nouvelles technologies, et l’insubordination à une esthétique ou un style précis. Cette thèse cherche alors à démontrer que la réinterprétation des figures non binaires historiques (androgyne platonicien, Hermaphrodite ovidien) et l’élaboration de nouvelles figures hybrides (cyborgs, mutants) répondraient au trouble des genres produit par l’évolution scientifique et l’obsolescence des structures psychiatriques contemporaines. Il s’agit ainsi d’examiner les différents codes de représentation d’un genre non binaire en adoptant une approche transdisciplinaire, avec principalement les études queer et le cadre épistémologique des savoirs situés, tout en s’appuyant sur la médecine, l’anthropologie et le droit. À travers le traitement d’une centaine de sources de natures variées et de différents fonds, cette étude est menée sous trois perspectives : la représentation de l’intime comme contestation des normes de genre ; la mise en scène d’une métamorphose du corps de l’artiste en corpus ; la construction d’un genre nomade entre transidentité et indétermination.

If the status of the artist has historically been thought as masculine and then renewed by an interest in women artists, this thesis examines the artistic construction of a gender non-binarity. It is postulated hereafter that non-binary corporal practices derived from the social field are observable in art through the work of self-transformation: our hypothesis assumes that the subversion of genders lies in the heart of creation, overlapping with the upheaval of artistic practices in the second half of the 20th century, such as the renewal of traditional mediums by the body and new technologies, and the insubordination to a specific aesthetic or style. This thesis then tries to demonstrate that the reinterpretation of historical non-binary figures (Platonic androgyne, Ovidian Hermaphrodite) and the development of new hybrid figures (cyborgs, mutants) would respond to the gender disorder produced by scientific evolution and the obsolescence of contemporary psychiatric structures. It is thus a question of examining the different codes of representation of a non-binary gender by adopting a transdisciplinary approach, with mainly queer studies and the epistemological framework of Situated Knowledges, while relying on medicine, anthropology and the legal discipline. Through the treatment of a hundred sources of various natures and from different archival resource, this study is carried through three perspectives: the representation of intimacy as a contestation of gender norms; the staging of a metamorphosis of the artist's body into a corpus; the construction of a nomadic gender between transidentity and indetermination.
