L'impossible histoire du baptême de Clovis : synthèse historiographique et perspectives historiques

This work aims to summarize the historiographical controversy concerning the baptism of Clovis. It shows how the figure of the first Christian king of the Franks was, following Gregory of Tours, exalted to the point of presenting Clovis as a patron saint of the alliance of the throne and the altar, the incarnation of a myth, then how modernity, stripped of that myth, failed to build a definitive synthesis of the reign of historical Clovis. In 1996, Michel Rouche's flamboyant attempt impressed his peers without gaining their support. Then from the multiplicity of opinions arose a confusion which largely extended beyond the academic domain and, today, the scientist Bruno Dumézil and the scholar Philippe de Villiers agree in attributing a mysterious character to the baptism of Clovis. It is to make of that baptism an ethereal truth so radically superior, in its circumstances, to the forces of reason, that it stands inaccessible. In contrast to these conceptions, the present work proposes a way of reconstruction for a history of the baptism of Clovis, a proposition founded on the convergence between the four perpetually revisited testimonies of bishops Avit, Nizier and Gregory of Tours and the king of the Ostrogoths Theodoric. Finally, it is therefore less the proposed conclusion than the epistemological imperative defended which must stand out: that of overcoming the temptation of not concluding in the absence of an absolute certainty to rather seek to transcend the inadequacies of the sources and, thus, make history.

Ce mémoire se propose de résumer la controverse historiographique concernant le baptême de Clovis. Il montre comment la figure du premier roi chrétien des Francs fut, à la suite de Grégoire de Tours, exaltée au point de présenter Clovis comme un saint auxiliaire de l'alliance du trône et de l'autel, l'incarnation d'un mythe, puis comment la modernité, dépouillée du mythe, a échoué à édifier une synthèse définitive du règne du Clovis historique. En 1996, la tentative flamboyante de Michel Rouche a impressionné ses pairs sans emporter leur adhésion. De la multiplicité des opinions est née une confusion qui a largement débordé du domaine universitaire et, de nos jours, le scientifique Bruno Dumézil et le littéraire Philippe de Villiers s'accordent pour attribuer au baptême de Clovis un caractère mystérieux. C'est faire du baptême une vérité éthérée si radicalement supérieure, dans ses circonstances, aux forces de la raison, qu'elle lui est inaccessible. À l'opposé de ces conceptions, le présent travail propose une piste de reconstruction pour une histoire du baptême de Clovis, proposition fondée sur l'accord entre les quatre témoignages perpétuellement revisités des évêques Avit, Nizier et Grégoire de Tours et du roi des Ostrogoths Théodoric. Au terme de cette étude, c'est donc moins la conclusion proposée que l'impératif épistémologique défendu qui doit marquer : celui de dépasser la tentation de ne rien conclure, faute d'une certitude absolue, pour plutôt chercher à transcender les insuffisances des sources et, ainsi, faire de l'histoire.
