The female drummer figurines of the southern Levant have been discussed many times in the relevant literature. Questions at issue are, amongst others, the purpose and value of these terracotta figurines and how they could have been related to the worship of a certain goddess. In the present article, the main interest is focused on the function of the frame drum. For example, some modified figurines show that the drum has secondarily been replaced by a baby or a baby has been attached on the drum. This feature indicates a direct connection between the drum and the phases of a woman’s reproductive life. An incantation against infertility from Ugarit as well as Old Testament texts dealing with vows in the context of childlessness and divine intervention refer to a probable function of the drummers within the framework of ancient incantation practices.

Die Trommlerfigurinen der südlichen Levante wurden in der einschlägigen Literatur wiederholt diskutiert. In Frage stehen unter anderem der Sinn und Zweck dieser Tonfigurinen und deren mögliche Zuordnung zum Kult einer bestimmten Göttin. Das Interesse im vorliegenden Artikel ist auf die Funktion der Trommel fokussiert. Zum Beispiel lassen einige modifizierte Figurinen, bei denen anstelle der Trommel oder auf der Trommel sekundär ein Baby appliziert wurde, auf einen direkten Zusammenhang zwischen der Trommel und den Phasen der weiblichen Fortpflanzung schliessen. Eine Beschwörung gegen Unfruchtbarkeit aus Ugarit und alttestamentliche Texte zu Gelübden im Kontext von Kinderlosigkeit und göttlicher Intervention verweisen auf eine mögliche Funktion der Trommlerinnen im Rahmen antiker Beschwörungspraxis
