La statue d’un Amour-enfant aux bras levés, dans la collection Borghèse à Rome au XVIIe siècle, et maintenant au Louvre, a été diversement interprétée : Amour à la treille, ou jouant à la balle, ou chassant ¬les papillons. La comparaison avec des monnaies de Corinthe et des bas-reliefs de la seconde moitié du IIe siècle apr. J.-C. permet de l’identifier à l’Amour soutenant le bouclier d’Aphrodite dans des variantes tardives en marbre de “ l’Aphrodite se mirant dans un bouclier ”, du type de l’Aphrodite de Corinthe.

What was Louvre Eros Ma 235 doing ?The statue of a Child-Eros with raised arms, in the Borghese Collection during the 17th century and now kept in the Louvre, has been interpreted in various ways : Eros with the grapes, or playing with a ball, or catching butterflies. The comparison with the coinage of Corinth and with reliefs of the second half of the 2nd century allows to identify the statue with the figure of Eros holding the shield of Aphrodite in the various late interpretations in marble of the “ Aphrodite admiring herself in a shield ”, a type we know as the Aphrodite of Corinth.
