The thesis studies the iconographic testimonies of the Great War. It compares the social experiences of combatant artists as war eyewitnesses from several former belligerent countries. In addition, this work examines art collectives, social movements and media such as the press, publishing and exhibition. The issue is to analyse images as artistic testimonies of the war with an iconological and socio-historical approach, inquiring the practices and processes of artistic creation in wartime and aftermath.

La thèse étudie les témoignages iconographiques de la Grande Guerre confrontant les expériences sociales d’artistes combattants en tant que témoins oculaires des anciens pays belligérants. De surcroît, ce travail examine les collectifs d’artistes, les mouvements sociaux et les médias tels que la presse, l’édition et l’exposition. L’enjeu est d’analyser les images en tant que témoignages artistiques de la guerre avec une approche iconologique et socio-historique, interrogeant les pratiques et les processus de création artistique en temps de guerre et d’après-coup.
