"Despite their importance for hospitaloperations, discussions of healthcare organizationlogistics and supply and materials managementare notably lacking in Brazilian literature.This paper describes a methodology for organizingthe supply of medical materials in public hospitals,based on an action-research approach.Interventions were based on the assumption thata significant portion of problems in Brazil´s NationalHealth System (SUS) facilities derive fromthe fact that their clinical and administrativedepartments do not see themselves as belonging tothe same production chain - neither the hospitalnor the supply department is aware of what theother produces. The development of the methodologyand its main steps are presented and discussed,against a background of recent literatureand total quality and supply chain managementconcepts."
