Thesis prizes are more and more common. Their objective is to honour the excellence of doctoral work and to promote innovative or, simply, remarkable work. The emphasis of such prizes depends on the university, the field of study or the objective of a fund. Since 2016, the biennial GIS thesis prize has been awarded to doctoral theses in human and social studies in Asia which were defended in France and in GIS Asia institutions abroad.
