Engendering the Feminine: two Irish poets—Eavan Boland and Medbh McGuckian

Cet article étudie deux poètes — Eavan Boland née en 1944 (Irlande du Sud) et Medbh McGuckian née en 1950 (Irlande du Nord) — deux parmi les figures marquantes d’un mouvement qui vit l’émergence sans précédent de poètes femmes, mouvement qui constitue un des faits notables de l’histoire littéraire irlandaise de la fin du xxe siècle. L’article suggère que leurs œuvres dialoguent avec certains aspects structurants des deux traditions féministes qui ont dominé la fin du siècle dernier. Il analyse la présence de deux thèmes : la revalorisation de l’espace domestique et la présence des hommes et du masculin, et examine leurs stratégies textuelles divergentes.

This article examines two poets—Eavan Boland b. 1944 (from Eire) and Medbh McGuckian b. 1950 (from the North)—who are part of a more general rise to visibility of women poets in the second half of the twentieth century. It suggests that the strategies at play in their poems have analogies in certain structuring features of the feminist discourse of the period, both second- and third- generation. More particularly it examines their respective and different attitudes to inherited constructions of femininity, to two topoi—the domestic, and the presence of men and the masculine—and their differing textual strategies.
