This paper focuses on the use of adjectives denoting the fame of a character or a story in Ovidian poetry. Starting from the observation that these adjectives work as signposts to the literary tradition and thus have an intertextual meaning, I propose a typology of their allusive effects. These adjectives can show the poet’s fidelity to a model and confer on a passage the authority of an old and well-established tradition. They can also serve to cover up a new element in the narrative by claiming that it is already renowned.

Cet article s’intéresse à l’emploi des adjectifs dénotant la célébrité d’un personnage ou d’une histoire dans la poésie ovidienne. À partir du constat que ces adjectifs font référence à la tradition littéraire et ont donc un sens intertextuel, il propose une typologie de leurs effets allusifs. Ces adjectifs peuvent souligner la fidélité du poète à un modèle et conférer à un passage l’autorité d’une tradition ancienne et bien établie ; ils peuvent aussi camoufler un élément nouveau du récit en prétendant qu’il est déjà renommé.
