Patterns and Theories of Traditional Resurgence in Tropical Africa

Depuis le début des années quatre-vingt-dix, l’Afrique a connu un regain d’activité politique dans le chef d’organisations à bases traditionnelle. Plutôt qu’un simple retour à des formes politiques présumément pré-coloniales en réaction à l’affaiblissement de l’Etat africain, cette résurgence apparaît davantage comme l’effet dérivé d’autres tendances qui ont caractérisé cette période, à savoir la démocratisation, la crise économique et la globalisation. Malgré sa nature r é a c t i v e, l e r e n o u v e a u t r a d i t i o n n e l a p p o r t e néanmoins une contribution significative à la reconfiguration du pouvoir en Afrique, que ce soit par l’incorporation de structures traditionnelles dans certains Etats, par leurs innovations institutionnelles dans d’autres, ou encore par leur occasionnel désengagement social.

Africa has witnessed a rise tradition-based political action since the beginning of the 1990s. Rather than a mere return to hypothetical pre-colonial forms in the wake of the weakening of the African state, this resurgence appears to be the opportunistic by-product of several other trends that have characterized this period, including democratization, economic crisis, and globalization. Despite this second-fiddle role, traditional revival still makes its own contribution to the reconfiguration of pawer in Africa, wether by its incorporation in, its challenge to, or its disengagement from the state.
