Jusqu’à la fin des années 1990 le quartier de Sainte-Marthe (Paris, 10e) abritait une population ouvrière et des ateliers d’artisanat. Depuis cette époque, ces activités ont disparu, et la population s’est transformée à travers à la fois une paupérisation et une gentrification.Des artistes-plasticiens se sont installés dans les anciens locaux d’artisans, et des professions artistiques au sens large ont repris et transformé un habitat vétuste et très dégradé.Cet article propose de montrer que le processus de gentrification ne correspond pas simplement au remplacement de catégories sociales populaires par des catégories de niveau socio-économique plus élevé. La gentrification se constitue aussi à travers le « travail social » effectué par les « gentrifieurs ». Ceux-ci en emménageant dans un habitat où l’environnement est difficile (trafic de drogues, ateliers clandestins, violence...) s’investissent matériellement et symboliquement. Mais ce faisant, ils construisent aussi l’espace du quartier en « ressources sociales » professionnellement mobilisables. Leur valorisation de la mixité sociale et de la sociabilité de quartier est cependant souvent mise à mal par une certaine pratique de l’« entre-soi ».
Until the end of the 1990’s, the neighbourhood of Sainte Marthe in the 10th district of Paris was working class with artisan workshops. This working class economy has now disappeared and the population has been transformed by the simultaneous processes of pauperisation and gentrification. Artists have now replaced the former artisans and what had become a decaying and degraded area has been transformed and given new life by what can be described in a very general sense as the artistic professions. This article proposes that gentrification doesn’t simply signify the replacement of the working class by those of a higher socio-economic category. Gentrification comes about also through the social effects of the gentrifiers who in moving into a difficult environment (drug trafficking, clandestine workshops, violence...) commit themselves both materially and symbolically to changing it. But in doing this they change the neighbourhood as a whole into a professionally adaptable social resource. Their valuing of the social mix and sociability of the neighbourhood is however undermined by a tendency of keeping to themselves.
ResumenHasta finales de los años 90’s el barrio de Sainte-Marthe (Paris, 10e) contaba con una población obrera y la presencia de talleres artesanales. Actualmente, dichas actividades han desaparecido y la población se ha transformado a la vez, por un efecto de pauperización y por una gentrificación.Diferentes artistas plásticos y profesionales ligados al arte se han instalado en los antiguos talleres, logrando así, transforma un contexto habitacional vetusto y sumamente degradado.Este artículo pretende mostrar como el proceso de gentrificación no se reduce solamente al desalojo de la población de origen por otra de mayores recursos económicos. Si no por el contrario, la gentrificación será constituida también por un trabajo social efectuado por los « gentrificadores ».La instalación de estos últimos en un contexto habitacional problemático (tráfico de drogas, talleres clandestinos, violencia...) observa una implicación material y simbólica, en la cual, ellos constituyen a su vez, el espacio del barrio como un « capital social » profesionalmente utilizable.Sin embargo, la valorización que ellos realizan sobre el carácter social mixto y la sociabilidad del barrio, se ve disminuida por una cierta práctica de permanecer entre pares, la práctica de « l’entre-soi ».
