Résumé En

The lettering in Greek inscriptions has been widely studied in order to date ancient texts through different styles of carving letters. Given the large number of inscriptions found in Greece, it is difficult to get an overview of all existing letter variations. With the support of digital technologies and within the framework of the E-STAMPAGES project led by the HiSoMA Research Lab in Lyon and the French School at Athens, my PhD research aimsto describe and question the characteristics of lettering by employing the digitization technology provided by the Digital Epigraphy and Archaeology Project. In addition to the studies already carried out in specific areas and periods, the challenge is to define a way to model lettering, highlighting various aspects, including the layout of texts as well as the forms of letters, punctuation, and so on. In my talk I will present a formal and structured description that aims to take account of characteristic variations in lettering, with the aim of placing paleographical features more fully within their spatial, temporal and archaeological contexts.
