Eléonore Cellard et al., « "From Coptic to Arabic: A New Palimpsest and the Early Transmission History of the Qu’rān" », HAL-SHS : histoire des religions, ID : 10.5913/jiqsa.5.2020.a003
Recently identified on the antiquities market, the Copto-Qur'ān palimpsest represents an important artifact for the history of the transmission of the Qur'ān. Because of its biblical lower text (i.e. erased text) in Coptic, the Qur'ān upper text written over it is likely certain to stem from Egypt. Hence, we would have the first evidence for localizing an early Qur'ān handwriting activity. Going beyond the quest of dating and provenance, the present study aims to replace the Copto-Qur'ān palimpsest in its context of production and provide a snapshot of the scribal practices of the Qur'ān in the earliest centuries.
