Le Comité épiscopal France – Amérique latine (CEFAL) a fonctionné pendant plusieurs décennies comme une véritable gare de triage pour envoyer des prêtres français dans les favelas de São Paulo ou sur les plateaux andins, à la demande d’évêques locaux effrayés par l’aura de la révolution cubaine. Le livre raconte comment les évêques de France ont largement improvisé une réponse collective à cet élan soutenu par Rome, en s’appuyant sur une génération de jeunes prêtres qui, une fois sur place, tombent amoureux d’une Amérique latine mythifiée qu’incarnent alors l’« évêque des pauvres » Hélder Câmara, le révolutionnaire Ernesto Guevara ou l’archiprêtre Ivan Illich installé à Cuernavaca, auprès duquel viennent se former des centaines de clercs missionnaires européens et nord-américains. Très rapidement, avec l’instauration des dictatures militaires et l’essor de la théologie de la libération, le CEFAL est sommé de choisir son camp. Les emprisonnements de clercs français se multiplient, accusés d’être des agents du communisme mondial. Tout à la fois instance officielle de l’épiscopat et caisse de résonance des militants tiers-mondistes, le Comité navigue à vue dans un contexte politique et religieux qui s’est radicalisé et il ne peut empêcher l’assassinat de deux des siens, Gabriel Longueville et André Jarlan. Cet ouvrage est une invitation à découvrir une histoire transatlantique jamais écrite, celle d’un moment « Amérique latine » en France qui, à travers un imaginaire et des engagements, a suscité des malentendus mais aussi des amitiés durables. Passeurs entre deux mondes, ces hommes aux trajectoires souvent peu ordinaires se sont brûlés au contact des tensions politiques, sociales et ecclésiales.
The Comité épiscopal France - Amérique latine (CEFAL) has operated for several decades as a marshalling yard for sending French priests to the favelas of São Paulo or to the Andean plateaux, at the request of local bishops frightened by the aura of the Cuban revolution. The book tells the story of how the French bishops largely improvised a collective response to this impetus supported by Rome, relying on a generation of young priests who, once there, fell in love with a mythical Latin America, embodied at the time by the "bishop of the poor" Hélder Câmara, the revolutionary Ernesto Guevara or the archpriest Ivan Illich, who had settled in Cuernavaca, who trained hundreds of European and North American missionary clerics. Very quickly, with the establishment of military dictatorships and the rise of liberation theology, the CEFAL was forced to choose sides. French clerics were increasingly imprisoned, accused of being agents of world communism. At once the official body of the episcopate and a sounding board for Third World activists, the Comité navigated in a political and religious context that had become more radical, and it was unable to prevent the assassination of two of its members, Gabriel Longueville and André Jarlan. This book is an invitation to discover an unwritten transatlantic history, that of a « Latin American moment » in France which, through an imaginary world and commitments, gave rise to misunderstandings but also to lasting friendships. Durante varias décadas, el Comité Episcopal Francia-América Latina (CEFAL) actuó como estación de clasificación para el envío de sacerdotes franceses a las favelas de São Paulo o a las mesetas andinas, a petición de los obispos locales atemorizados por el aura de la revolución cubana. El libro relata cómo los obispos franceses improvisaron en gran medida una respuesta colectiva a este impulso apoyado por Roma, apoyándose en una generación de jóvenes sacerdotes que, una vez allí, se enamoraron de una América Latina mitificada personificada por el "obispo de los pobres" Hélder Câmara, el revolucionario Ernesto Guevara y el arcipreste Ivan Illich en Cuernavaca, que formó a cientos de clérigos misioneros europeos y norteamericanos.
