Résumé
The vessel left on May 1939 the port of Hamburg, heading towards Cuba, with a little less than one thousand Jewish refugees on board. Havana, just like Washington shortly afterwards, denied the passengers the right to disembark. This resulted in a long oddyssey, that ended in the return of the refugees to Europe and to a tragic fate. Afoumado relates how American remembrance transformed this act of refusing help to people in danger into a national icon of civic obligation, even making of this historical chapter a political lesson aimed at guiding today's attitude of the United States towards other refugees.
