Ressource et distinction. Une multilocalité élitaire et notabiliaire (Rhône, 1800-1830)

Multilocality is a way to understand the diversity of notabilities in France in the beginning of the 19th century. From multiple settlements to multilocal influence, we can see a large panel of forms of notability. From a notable of village to a departmental personality, each notable uses resources beyond the narrow territory he lives in, or multiplies the supports which would be able to raise him as an inevitable intermediary of the government. At the same time, the multiple settlements distinguish the superior part of the notability: on the one hand, through elitist strategies of social discrimination, and, on the other hand, because of the incapacity of most people to overcome the pitfalls of multilocality. From an individual point of view, multilocality may result of a family tradition - as habit of class -, or indicate the personal character of a recently acquired notability. On the contrary, multilocality may only exist on the scale of a lineage, helped by the scattering of the members who are parts of the prestige of the name, which gives benefits to each member. So, to analyse the diversity of multilocality, through social and family groups of multi notables' settlements, enables us to understand the diversity of these groups and their capacity to change multilocality into distinctive resource.

La multilocalité constitue une clé de lecture de la diversité du groupe notabiliaire de la France du premier 19e siècle. De l'ancrage multiple au rayonnement polytopique ou multi-scalaire, se dévoile une palette de notabilités. Du notable de village à la personnalité départementale, chacun mobilise des ressources au-delà du territoire circonscrit sur lequel il évolue, ou multiplie les points d'assise propres à l'élever en inévitable intermédiaire du pouvoir. Parallèlement, l'ancrage multiple distingue la frange supérieure de la notabilité, d'une part, via des stratégies élitaires de discrimination sociale et, d'autre part, du fait de l'incapacité du grand nombre à dominer les écueils d'une multiplicité d'ancrages. Individuelle, la multilocalité peut s'inscrire dans une tradition familiale, comme habitus de classe - nobiliaire -, ou signaler le caractère personnel d'une notabilité acquise de fraîche date. A l'inverse, la multilocalité peut n'exister qu'à l'échelle de la lignée, par la dispersion de ses membres qui participent au prestige et au rayonnement du nom qui, en retour, rejaillit sur chacun d'eux. Analyser la diversité des pratiques polytopiques, au prisme des groupes sociaux et familiaux de notables multilocalisés, permet de saisir au plus près la diversité de ces groupes, et leur faculté à muer la multilocalité en ressource distinctive.
