Starting from Fleischman’s observation (1982) that the latin ancestor of the conditional tense developed a modal usage out of its temporal meaning, the paper explores the semantic evolution of the conditional tense from Old French up to Modern French. The first part sketches out the situation observed in Old French and brings to light the existence of the mitigation use of the conditional from this period onwards. The second part traces the major changes affecting the uses of this tense, notably its increase in frequency and the emergence of its evidential uses, and accounts for the observed semantic changes. The proposed analyses are summarized at the end of the article by means of a semantic map.

Partant de l’observation de Fleischman (1982) selon laquelle l’ancêtre du conditionnel en latin aurait développé un usage modal à partir de son sens temporel, le présent article explore l’évolution sémantique du conditionnel depuis l’ancien français jusqu’au français contemporain. Une première partie esquisse la situation observée en ancien français et met en évidence l’existence de l’emploi atténuatif du conditionnel dès cette période. La seconde partie retrace les changements majeurs qui ont affecté l’usage de ce temps, notamment l’augmentation de sa fréquence et l’émergence des emplois évidentiels, puis analyse des changements sémantiques observés.
