Maria Ciesielska. “The doctors of the Warsaw ghetto” A lot has been written about the history of the Jewish ghettos in Nazi-occupied Poland, especially about the largest one, in Warsaw, which was hermetically sealed in November 1940. As it held over 450,000 people, the ‘Jewish residential area’ (Jüdische Wohnbezirk), as it was called by the German authorities, was overcrowded, and the lack of food, clean drinking water and basic medical treatment led to a huge mortality rate.
