"The Empire beyond the limes : Permanence and Change in the Barbaricum between the 1st and 4th centuries AD". This paper presents the first results of a research focused on the study of contacts between Rome and the Barbaricum in Central Europe between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Our study is articulated around two different objectives : first, the conceptualization of the nature of the relationship between Romans and barbarians and their reciprocal influences on the Eastern Barbaricum ; second, the investigation of salt mining in the area of western Poland, through which it is possible to document and analyze the abundant evidence of that interaction. It will be argued that since the end of the 1st century B. C., there is abundant evidence that contacts between Rome and indigenous communities of the Eastern part of the limes entailed profound changes and reciprocal influences.
