Résumé En

Mathematics classrooms are widely recognised as complex and dynamic, with interactions occurring with an intricate combination of cultural, social and mathematical facets. A wide range of observation protocols have been developed, often with the aim of improving teaching and student outcomes. However, these are often high-inference instruments, so use by those outside of the development team is problematic. This paper seeks to contribute to the debate as to how researchers can build on prior studies through the application of a previously developed observation framework to a shared data set of a class video and transcript. The purpose and structure of the Orchestration of Mathematics Framework (OMF), developed for a classroom-based video study, is outlined, with the underpinning conceptualisations of teaching signposted. A 17-minute section of a lesson is then analysed in order to illustrate the affordances and limitations of the OMF.
