We illustrate the usefulness of generic corpus calibration for the diachronic analysis of the French language. We explore the case of stylistic fronting of the infinitive and the participle. We conduct this study in three corpora consisting respectively of literary texts, Norman custom laws and trials, from the Old French to the Classical French period. The generic calibration reveals that the evolution of these fronting phenomena differs according to the type of text. We also show that legal texts display an over-representation of these constructions, in connection with the practice of the Latin language observed by the legal experts of the time.
