Michel Bréal was certainly the main French linguist of his time and he played an important role as a councilor for the Republican governments at the beginning of the IIIrd Republic, in particular in the realm of their school policy. From his terror in front of the Paris Commune to his attitude regarding the “Affaire Dreyfus”, his political commitment is deeply rooted in a firm albeit strongly moderate republicanism. This paper aims at showing how Michel Bréal did deliberately at the same time his work as a linguist and his interventions in the domain of school policy.

Michel Bréal fut sans doute le principal linguiste français de son époque et il occupa une place non négligeable de conseiller des gouvernements républicains des débuts de la IIIe République, en particulier dans le domaine de leur politique scolaire. De son épouvante devant la Commune à son attitude durant l'affaire Dreyfus, son engagement politique est bien dans la ligne d'un républicanisme ferme mais fort modéré. Le présent article vise à montrer comment Michel Bréal mena de front volontairement son œuvre de linguiste et ses interventions dans le domaine de la politique éducative.
