Cet article constitue l’introduction du numéro sur les « possibles des mondes ouvriers et socialistes. Il s’interroge sur la période charnière 1917-1923. Il montre comment les incertitudes de cette période – révolution bolchevique, sortie de guerre – recomposent les horizons d’attentes et les champs d’expérience de ces mouvements. Dans la lignée des interrogations de l’avant-guerre, mais dans un contexte profondément bouleversé, les mouvements ouvriers et socialistes affrontent alors la question du rapport au pouvoir et à l’État, comme celle de l’internationalisme. Il s’agit donc d’étudier tous ces possibles et ces questions ouvertes, dans une période où rien n’est encore tranchée, en intégrant les apports significatifs d’une histoire sociale et politique renouvelée, comme d’une histoire globale qui repense les territoires et les frontières.

This article is the introduction to the issue on the “possibilities of workers’ and socialists’ worlds”. It looks at the pivotal period 1917-1923. It shows how the uncertainties of this period - the Bolshevik revolution, the end of the war - recomposed the horizons of expectations and the fields of experience of these movements. In line with the questions of the pre-war period, but in a profoundly changed context, the workers’ and socialist movements then confronted the question of the relationship to power and the State, as well as that of internationalism. It is therefore a question of studying all these possibilities and open questions, in a period where nothing is yet clear-cut, by integrating the significant contributions of a renewed social and political history, as well as of a global history that rethinks territories and borders.
