–. In the final part of Socles’ speech in Herodotus’ book five, the participle ἐπιφανεῖσα (92η.2) is notto be referred to ἔφη (as is commonly thought), but to σημανέειν. Melissa’s ghost does not show itself twice,but once only. When Periander’s messengers arrive at the nekyomanteion, Melissa says that she will not revealthe place of the παρακαταθήκη either by appearing and pointing with signs, or by explaining in words.
