The term Penestes is well known as a designation for the serfs in Thessaly. This study deals with the rare and metaphorical use of the term in poetic language at the beginning of the Hellenistic period, where it sometimes means “slave” or “poor man” without reference to Thessaly. The attestations of the poetical metaphor, the latest of which dates to 281–241/0 B.C., give us a new terminus post quem for the liberation of the Thessalian Penestai towards the end of the 3rd century.

Le terme Péneste est bien connu comme nom des serfs en Thessalie. Cette étude porte sur l’usage rare et métaphorique du terme dans la langue poétique du début de l’époque hellénistique, dans laquelle il désigne parfois un « esclave » ou « homme pauvre » sans rapport avec la Thessalie. Les occurrences de la métaphore poétique, dont la dernière est datée entre 281 et 241-240 av. J.-C., nous fournissent un nouveau terminus post quem pour la libération des Pénestes thessaliens vers la fin du IIIe siècle.
