Martyrs’ Day in the Egyptian Media Space After 2011

This research note traces the evolution of “Martyrs’ Day” in Egypt from its creation in 1969 by Nasser to 2019. Long neglected, this commemoration was originally designed to honor the martyrs of the army. However, it was reinvented by various revolutionary actors in 2011 to celebrate the “Martyrs of the Revolution” before being taken over by the authorities in 2013. Since then, it has been dedicated solely to the “Martyrs of Duty”, i.e. soldiers and policemen who died in the “war against terrorism” waged by the Egyptian state. The commemoration has experienced an unprecedented popularization and mediatization.

Cette note de recherche retrace l’évolution du « Jour des Martyrs » en Égypte depuis sa création en 1969 par Nasser jusqu’en 2019. Longtemps négligée, cette journée originellement conçue en l’honneur des martyrs de l’armée a été investie par différents acteurs révolutionnaire en 2011 pour célébrer les « martyrs de la révolution », avant d’être reprise en main par les autorités dès 2013. Depuis lors, elle est uniquement dédiée aux « martyrs du devoir », soldats et policiers qui meurent dans la « guerre contre le terrorisme » menée par l’État égyptien, et connaît une expansion médiatique sans précédents.

تتبع هده المذكرة البحثية تطور يوم الشهيد في مصر منذ إنشائه في ١٩٦٩ على يد جمال عبد الناصر حتى ٢٠١٩. تم تصميم هذا الاحتفال لتكريم شهداء الجيش ولقد تم إهماله منذ فترة طويلة. ولكن أعاد العديد من الثوريين استثماره في ٢٠١١ للاحتفال بشهداء الثورة قبل أن تستولي عليه السلطات في ٢٠١٣. ومنذ ذلك الحين تم تخصيصه لشهداء الواجب، أي رجال الأمن الذين قتلوا خلال الحرب على الإرهاب التي تشنها الدولة المصرية وشهد هذا الاحتفال انتشارا إعلاميا غير مسبوق.
