Authors present preliminary trials on the utilization of Sign Writing (SW) as a tool for representing the Italian Sign Language (LIS). The use of SW has highlighted the differences existing between the face-to-face interaction and the written expression, as well as between “transcription” and “original” writings; it has also made possible to deepen metalinguistic and methodological aspects in ways until now impossible with other notation systems. The analysis was based on three texts produced in SW, telling the story of the “Pear film” of Chafe (1980): a transcription from a video-recorded face-to-face narrative, and two essays thought in LIS and written directly in SW. Similarities and differences in the symbolization, due to the communication modalities, were easily examined, thanks to the SW ability in representing both manual and no-manual components of the LIS.
