We studied the discourses and land use and agricultural practices concerning the installation of the land reform settlement Milton Santos, whichis supposed to work according to the Sustainable Development Project (PDS) model. The guidelines for this model is to produce with maximum use of nature conservation practices, as proposed by the National Institute of Colonization and Land Reform (INCRA). The methodological basis was the Theory of Justification, which focuses on how people justify their actions. To match justifications with field reality, we first surveyed the settlement, particularly the land occupation and use pattern. The justifications voiced relate both to engagement in land reform movement and to the strategies of residence and work on settlement lots. On this factual basis, we discuss the principles of justice mobilized in settlers´ arguments, founded mainly on and ecological justice order. According to settlers´ perception, ecological reasons constitute an increasingly legitimate reference to justify the struggle for land reform and ecologically-based land reform projects.
