In a period of great change, discernment is an essential practice for the life and mission of the Church. The recent synod of bishops on the theme of Young people, faith and vocational discernment recognized this. The synodal process, which unfolded through various stages over around three years, offers us a few ways to approach the topic of discernment. If, initially, everything was centred on the discovering one’s personal vocation, little by little the participants became aware that the Church itself absolutely has to learn to discern. Thus it was that the synodal methodology came to focus on the three verbs for vocational discernment provided in Evangelii gaudium no. 51 (recognize, interpret, choose), enabling the synod to be an authentic and fruitful exercise in ecclesial discernment.
