Urban Public Economics Review
Carlos Pinho et al., « Regional Growth transitions and the evolution of income disparities in Europe », Urban Public Economics Review, ID : 10670/1.xlr5cg
"This paper's approach is focused upon the dynamic evolution of European regional income per capita and departs from the notions of polarization and of inequality. Based on a sample of European regions using NUTS 2 data, the results, for the period between 1980 and 2007, point to a general tendency for diminishing regional disparities, even if after 2004 they seem to increase. However, this trend is also compatible with the presence of polarization processes giving rise to the formation of several internally homogenous clusters of regions. Under attention is the region's economic growth relative to the average performance in a subgroup of regions. The evidence signals regional growth with different paces and discloses a spatial spread coherent with the new economic geography approach. The results' implications for public policies are discussed, in a framework where increasing attention is given to the effectiveness of public spending."
