The Great Work of Leonardo is a small format painting (29 × 36 cm) painted on an oak panel made up of two horizontal boards assembled with a sharp joint. It bears the inventory number “229” on its reverse. The apparent theme is the Temptation, in the tradition of the Temptations of Saint Anthony which appeared in the Middle Ages, taken up by Hieronymus Bosch around 1500, and perpetuated until the middle of the 20th century when Max Ernst and Salvador Dali clashed to give us their surreal versions. Another reading of this painting makes it possible to highlight, between the lines of this composition, the theme of the Great Alchemical Work, in an esoteric mode intelligible only to circles of initiates.

Le Grand Œuvre de Leonardo est un tableau de petit format (29 × 36 cm) peint sur panneau de chêne composé de deux planches horizontales assemblées à joint vif. Il porte à son revers le numéro d'inventaire « 229 ». Le thème apparent en est la Tentation, dans la tradition des Tentations de saint Antoine apparue au Moyen Âge, reprise par Jérôme Bosch autour de 1500, et perpétuée jusqu’au milieu du XXe siècle où Max Ernst et Salvador Dali s'affrontèrent pour nous livrer leurs versions surréalistes. Une autre lecture de ce tableau permet de mettre en lumière, en filigrane de cette composition, le thème du Grand œuvre alchimique, sur un mode ésotérique intelligible aux seuls cercles d’initiés.
