Creating, assembling, mixing, stacking or wetting fascinates children. One of the great advantages of vernacular architecture is that it uses healthy materials. Earth, stone, wood, straw and water are familiar, non-aggressive materials. They are mastered by most children who have had the pleasure of handling them by a lake or a river shore. It is always possible to get a slight injury by catching a splinter of wood in the finger or a pebble on the foot, but that is nothing like handling concrete or metal beams.There are many possibilities for mobilising children and we give here some examples that have often been tried and tested and have proved their effectiveness.
