The decline in movie theater attendance over the course of nearly forty years (45 million spectators in 1980 vs. 1,562 million in 2018) can largely be attributed to poor theater management and film piracy. After a long period of cinema shortages (with 251 screens in 1981 vs. 65 in 2018, of which 60 are digital), and aided by the Moroccan Cinema Center, Morocco has since 2002 witnessed all of its theaters modernize.
