La relation des hommes aux animaux connaît un tournant majeur au milieu du xixe siècle. Les nouveautés de l’année 1856 (développement de l’hippophagie, pisciculture, taxe sur les chiens, exposition agricole) vont permettre aux auteurs du Charivari de mener une réflexion axée sur les deux pôles du bestiaire et du zoo. Sous les dehors du rire, du charivari, s’élabore une interrogation de nature politique sur la hiérarchie des hommes et des animaux et sur un possible retour à l’anthropophagie via l’hippophagie.

1856 as seen by Le Charivari : year of the bestiary or year the zoo ?The relationship between men and animals is at a turning point in the middle of the xixth century. The novelties in 1856 (the development of horsemeat consumption, of fish farming, the tax on dogs, the agricultural show) led the authors of Le Charivari to a thoughtful cogitation on the two sides of both the bestiary and the zoo. Under the pretext of laugh and uproar, a political issue on human and animal hierarchies and a possible return to anthropophagy through hippophagy is raised.
